Joyal's CatLab Adams, Frank

John Frank Adams(1930-1989) was an English mathematician working in algebraic topology. He studied under the direction of Shaun Wylie and received his Phd from Cambridge University in 1956.

Adams is famous for having solved the Hopf invariant one problem and for having introduced the Adams spectral sequence as a tool for solving it. He is also famous for solving the vector field problem for spheres by using KK-theory and for introducing the Adams operations.
