Gregory Maxwell Kelly (1930-2007) is the founder of the Australian school of category theory. He received his Ph.D. from Cambridge University in 1957 under the supervision of Shaun Wylie. He was a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Sydney from 1973 until his retirement in 1994. His students include Ross Street?, a major figure of category theory.
With Samuel Eilenberg, Max Kelly introduced the notion of enriched category in 1963-1965. He eventually developped the theory of enriched categories in a monograph published in 1984:
