Donald E. Knuth is an American computer scientist and a mathematician, a professor emeritus at Stanford University. Knuth is the author of TeX, Metafont, the cweb computer language, of many important algorithms in formal languages, parsing, combinatorics, numerics, rewriting systems, of the concept of literate programming, of the series of books “The Art of Computer Programming”, a book on surreal numbers etc.

A combinatorial construction proves an identity for the product of the Pfaffian of a skew-symmetric matrix by the Pfaffian of one of its submatrices. Several applications of this identity are followed by a brief history of Pfaffians.
