Collingwood discusses the triad – utility, right, duty – as the successive removal of caprice.

Could we apply this to a mathematician? What would it be to work as a unique individual doing a unique act in a unique situation because it was the only one they could do? This sounds very like Polanyi and the personal responsibility of the scientist: Here I stand I can do no other!
