In perturbative quantum field theory, *dimensional regularization* is a method for renormalization. Here Feynman amplitudes are expressed via Schwinger parameters in worldline formalism making the resulting expression a function of spacetime dimension $d$ which may formally be set to any real number. Then one regularizes via taking the limit $d \to 4$.
