## Definition

The complex numbers $+i$ and $-i$, i.e. the two solutions $x$ to the equation $x^2 = -1$, are the imaginary units.

A complex number of the form $y i$ with $y \in \mathbb{R}$ a real number is called a purely imaginary number.
