Definition

Let $k$ be a field and $\overline{k}$ its algebraic closure. A reductive algebraic group $G$ over $k$ is split if it contains a split torus $\mathbb{G}_m^{\times n} \subset G$ whose base change is a maximal torus in $G_{\overline{k}}$.
