In physics on manifolds with boundary or with domain walls, branes, defects, etc. that piece of worldvolume/spacetime away from all these singularies (the remaining interior) is often called the bulk of worldvolume/spacetime. Accordingly, the sector of field theory applying to the bulk is sometimes called the bulk field theory, in contrast to the boundary field theory.
