Idea

Given a function f:XKf \colon X \to K where KK is a ring or field or abelian group or possibly anything else, and given an element cKc \in K, then the level set of ff at cc in XX is the preimage f 1(c)Xf^{-1}(c) \in X.

For c=0c = 0 this is the zero locus.
